Alliance ArchitectureAnnapolis, Maryland [Fall 2013 - Present]
Alliance is an interior architecture firm with a focus on high-end corporate interiors. My concentration has been in law firms, non-profits, tech companies, sustainable investment firms, etc. As a project designer, I lead the design efforts of my 2-3 person team from project initiation though testfits, construction documentation, construction admin., final construction, and day two items. I also work with clients to develop branding and graphics for their new space.

About:
Completed 2020 This project, spanning the course of 2018-2020, was my first big project affected by Covid-19. As a two-person team, my project manager and I (project architect and designer) met with the client to testfit the space, work out space planning, completely renderings, select all the finishes, and work with furniture subcontractor to finish out the space. When Covid-19 hit, our site visits stopped so we oversaw construction virtually through or local architect of record. The client was looking for a more polished, and current space in which they could entertain larger groups than previous spaces. The design around the main public space really centered around the ability to host and offer as much flexibility as possible. The colors and finishes aimed for polished yet bold; conservative in color yet strong in pattern. Utilizing the more traditional chevron, we carried that concept through the acoustic panels, backsplashes, and carpet to offset the strong linear lines of the building. |

Dupont Circle, DC - Non-Profit Advocates for Patients' Rights

81,000sf | 3 full floors + Partial Penthouse Conference Center
About:
Currently under construction Starting in 2019, we began touring 25 buildings for this 80k square foot build out with a laundry list of needs. We narrowed the search down to 7 buildings which we completed testfits for before selecting the final location. The space we landed on included (3) full floors of freshly gutted, albeit rough, space and a brand new penthouse. Starting from the beginning sketches to on-site CA today, we're a 4-5 months out from final move-in. This patient-advocate non-profit client had been previously spread out across 6 suites in 2 different buildings. This build-out was an opportunity to finally bring all their staff into one combined space. To play up the togetherness, we designed a 4-story connecting stair with an adjacent moss wall to pull in their sustainability goals with high visual impact. A focus was really put on a welcoming environment as well as true accessibility for their clients of all physical abilities. Considering the non-profit status, a emphasis was also put on being on the humble side and not too showy. Mixing felt baffles and wall-panels with large format tiles, bold colored carpets and bright back-painted glass panels helped us achieve that feeling. |

As a sustainable investment firm, a huge goal for this design was to incorporate meaningful and smart materials to show their dedication to the environment. Using recycled and recyclable products was not only important to know, but also very important for visitors to be able to see. Incorporating bamboo products that still read high end was important. Paired with the two-toned epoxy concrete topper, bold gray and blue carpets and blue stone reception desk, the green wall and plyboo millwork really warms up the otherwise cold space public space. Leaving the plenum exposed allowed us to take advantage of the building's slab to slab height and mix the more industrial look with the polished, professional touches.
This process has been quite interesting to do though covid-times, but one of the most informative and rewarding experiences. Every turn included changes, delays, alternate selections, and as-built conflicts but our teams' ability to navigate has been great to be a part of.

7,000sf | Renovated 200 year old Cotton Mill
About:
Completed in 2020 A returning client approached us in 2018 about an expansion into a new space in a 200 year old, recently refurbished, cotton mill. Traveling down to meet with the client, survey the existing space, conduct in-person CA bi-weekly, and work partly remotely, I worked as a member of the project design team to create this amazing space. Once a leader in the textile mill industry of NC, this hydro-powered mill effectively ran from 1818 to 1996. Understanding the history and patina of character this space has, our primary goal of this build-out was to preserve and highlight as much of the existing material and structure as possible while providing a functional and beautiful space for our client. Area rugs were chosen to highlight the existing wood floors, light shelves were positioned to up-light the wood ceilings and structural beams, and as much glass as possible was used in interior partitions to allow for views out to the waterfront. |

We worked with more industrial materials such as laser cut metal panels and concrete-like countertops juxtaposed with softer, more residential carpets and fabric panels. These fabric panels were custom designed with etching and laser cuts to emulate spools of yarn as a nod to the building’s history. One of our favorite personal touches was an old bench and fire hose rack found in the space that we cleaned up and presented in our gallery as historic art.
By weaving together the vernacular of old and new, and speaking to how a space can still proudly display its roots through respectful reuse, this project has quickly become one of my favorites.
